Case research journals have their own requirements for content and format. Typically, case writers submit their cases for peer review and obtain feedback and suggestions, then make adjustments and re-submit their cases for publication. Some journal prefers decision cases – that is, where the reader (student) is required to make a non-subtle decision. Other journals accept illustrations – descriptions of what occurred in an organization where students assess, but do not necessarily decide. Most case journals do not accept “disguised” cases. Most journals require that authors submit both the case study and an accompanying instructor’s manual (IM). Table 1 provides a list of case research journals.

Other journals are not primarily dedicated to the dissemination of cases, but do include cases that fit with their research focus. Many journals regularly or sporadically publish cases. Typically, the journals require both a case and IM, and both are subject to a level of peer-review typical of that journal. Authors are cautioned to investigate what gets published, since in some case the IM also gets published. Table 2 provides a list.

The Western Casewriters Association conference is held in conjunction with the Western Academy of Management (WAM) conference is a unique opportunity to engage with other case-writers in a small group format to exchange feedback and polish-up your case, learn about using cases in the class room, get a peer-reviewed conference on your vita and enjoy the presentations from leading case authors and case educators.
It is an excellent professional development opportunity because it is a "developmental" conference designed to provide feedback from experienced case researchers in order to move the projects toward eventual publication in a top-level journal such as the Case Research Journal. The format is round-table discussions. You will be grouped with three or four other people who have written cases and will spend time with an experienced facilitator providing feedback on each others' cases. The feedback, although rigorous, is very friendly. Or, you may attend the conference just to learn more about case-research and see presentations on how to teach with cases. Cases should deal with issues important to their disciplines. They are generally framed around problems facing some decision maker in the organization. The cases may be based on field research or secondary sources but must be entirely factual. Submission deadline: January 20, 2009 Submit case and instructor’s manuals to Steve McGuire, smcguir@exchange.calstatela.edu Volunteer to review cases by e-mailing Steve McGuire, smcguir@exchange.calstatela.edu Who should Attend the WCA meeting in 2009? • Academic researchers looking for a peer-reviewed platform to develop their case research; • Researchers interested in learning more about case research; • Educators looking to improve their classroom performance by incorporating cases into their curricula |
